Minutes to decimal hours

Payroll software wants 7.75, not 7:45. Divide the minutes by 60, or use the chart below.

The formula

Decimal hours = hours + (minutes ÷ 60)

So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + (45 ÷ 60) = 7 + 0.75 = 7.75 hours.

Decimal hours back to minutes

Multiply the decimal part by 60. 8.35 hours is 8 hours and 0.35 × 60 = 21 minutes, so 8:21.

A common mistake

7:30 is not 7.30 hours. It is 7.50. Typing 7.30 into payroll underpays 12 minutes every time.

Rounding time

Many time clocks round punches to the nearest 5, 6 (one tenth of an hour) or 15 minutes. Under the federal rule, rounding is allowed only if it averages out over time and does not end up underpaying people. Calculating from exact minutes, as this calculator does, avoids the problem.
