How to read military time
Military time counts the hours of the day from 00 to 23, so there is no AM or PM. The first two digits are the hour and the last two are the minutes: 0730 is 7:30 in the morning and 1930 is 7:30 in the evening. Midnight is 0000 (some time clocks show 2400 at the end of a day) and noon is 1200.
Afternoon trick: for any time from 1300 on, subtract 12 from the hour to get PM time. 1645 − 12 hours = 4:45 PM. For morning times, just drop the leading zero.
Adding up hours on a military-time time card
- Subtract the start from the end: 1530 − 0700. If the minutes of the end are smaller, borrow an hour: 15:30 − 7:00 = 8:30.
- Take off unpaid breaks: 8:30 − 0:30 = 8:00.
- Convert minutes to decimals for payroll by dividing by 60: 45 minutes = 0.75 hours.
- For a night shift that runs past midnight, add 24 hours to the end time first: 2200 to 0600 is 30:00 − 22:00 = 8 hours.

Questions
How do you convert military time to regular time?
For 1300 and later, subtract 12 from the hour and add PM: 1700 is 5:00 PM. From 0100 to 1159, drop the leading zero and add AM. 0000 is 12:00 AM (midnight) and 1200 is 12:00 PM (noon).
How do I calculate hours worked in military time?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract unpaid breaks. 0645 to 1515 is 8 hours 30 minutes; minus a 30 minute lunch is 8 hours. If the shift passes midnight, add 24 hours to the end time first.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
Both are used. 0000 is the start of a day and 2400 is the end of the same day. Most time clocks print 0000.
